Across the United States, 1 in 5 youth live with obesity, with Black and Latino children and teens disproportionately affected. These disparities drive higher rates of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and other lifestyle-driven chronic illnesses far too early in life.

In North Carolina, the challenge is even more urgent with nearly 1 in 5 youth ages 6–17 experiencing obesity, and over 15% of high school students are already living with it. Behind those numbers are young lives navigating systems that have long disinvested in access to affordable, culturally relevant wellness resources.

Eat Drink Disrupt (EDD) Fit & Fuel Tennis is our response. This culturally resonant initiative combines mentorship, movement and whole food, plant-based lifestyle education to help youth build lifelong wellness habits while dismantling the barriers that keep health inequities in place. Through curriculum-driven, evidence-based learning and active play, we’re fueling an informed, active and healthier generation.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Eat Drink Disrupt (EDD) Fit & Fuel Tennis, led by Nadia Hilton-Adams, Co-Founder and Program Lead, is a youth wellness and lifestyle equity program delivered in collaboration with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation.

Serving youth ages 5–17, the program helps combat childhood obesity through tennis, exercise, mentorship and whole food, plant-based lifestyle education. Each 2½-hour session blends movement and instruction led by former Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Division I collegiate athletes, including Nadia, a former elite tennis athlete and Nike Tennis Sports Camp Pro whose focus is to provide a fun, high-energy, relatable learning environment where health and confidence grow together.

Participants receive whole food, plant-based snacks, healthy fruits, hydration, branded shirts, and family-friendly cook & care guides via take-home recipe cards; making nutrition education accessible beyond the court.

Hosted at the Sugaw Creek Recreation Center in Charlotte, the program runs up to three times annually,  reaching up to 100 youth per session.

Guided by physician and expert input, EDD Fit & Fuel Tennis is part of Power is Giving’s evidence-based, culturally aligned model that connects movement, mentorship, and nutrition to build lifelong wellness equity.
